Today was the first day we got to sleep in and it was GLORIOUS! I
woke up a little early and did some laundry. Then we headed off to
brunch and then gathered for Community Service Day. We left with our
seminar group and went to the First Baptist Church, a short walk, on
Main Street. There we weeded, mulched, laid down rocks, planted flowers,
among other things. The manual labor wasn’t bad at all but the bad part
was the sweltering heat because we toiled from 1-430. The good part was
that we got treated with ice water and ice cream! At one point, we were
planting daffodil bulbs and my friend Mallory said we should sing
something and I immediately said “Dig it” from Holes! Not going to lie, I
did feel like Shia Labeouf at one point. Or was it Zero because he got
fed up and ran away? :)
There was this adorable old many who came to work with us and later,
she showed us the pew where she and her husband met! She was 79 and
still going strong.
After dinner, there was a Disney movie, The Lion King, but I was so
wiped that Hannah and I just decided to chill in the room. Today, we
also had a hall buddy Jason because our RA, Leanndra, is at her
roommates wedding and since his birthday was yesterday, we made him a
huge birthday card. We also drew the Fazoli’s tomato since he recited a
poem about spaghetti and meatballs to the entire GSP scholars :) he in
turn treated us with midnight snacks and read us a bedtime story. I
think we’ll get along very well with him-he’ll be with us every Monday!
