7.02.2013// When it Rains, go Cosmic Bowling!

Just, don’t forget socks! Or in my case, being only one sock instead of 2 -.- (I ended up getting 2 sizes bigger and wearing the bowling shoes with my own shoes also on my feet haha)

Today in Are You What You Eat, we finished up watching Forks over Knives which was incredible. I like to think I eat a mostly plant-based diet (I would call myself pescaterian) like the movie suggests everyone should be doing. I find it astounding how with just 5 weeks of eating such a diet, a man lowered his risk for heart disease by 48% and his cholesterol dropped by more than 125 points! We also read from Pollan’s book “Food Rules” and then went to the library to work on our projects.
Afterwards, our hall went bowling as a bonding exercise and it was crazy fun! Hopefully we do more activities like that :) it was also very fun to attempt to stop Hannah from winning ;) (although it didn’t work because she won nonetheless haha)

In Journalism, we celebrated the publication of our newspaper! Lynn took us to The Fuzzy Duck to mingle over coffee and I hit the jackpot. I FINALLY, after one and a half years, found a book I have been looking for!! It’s called “Howl” by beatnik author Allen Ginsberg and I cannot wait to devour it tonight. We did get caught in the rain on the way back though and got soaked!

Running club got cancelled because of the rain and even though there was a classic film on tonight (featuring the one and only Humphrey Bogart!!!!) I just couldn’t muster up the energy to sit still in the theatre for 2 1/2 hours. So, the rest of the night will be spent chatting in the dorm and catching up on The Walking Dead. I’m about to finish season 2 and Hannah and I just got Jessica addicted and she’s on the second episode now.

Tomorrow will be an early morning since we leave for our field trip at 8am! And, the best part is, that’s now the only field trip I will be on this week!

Also, we’re officially a published newspaper! This would be our entire newspaper crew celebrating the fact that we got published and got a review of 10/10! We also went down to The Fuzzy Duck for celebratory coffee!

6.26.2013// Morehead News
June 26th - Morehead News

Today was Wednesday which meant that I had Journalism for 5 hours straight. We started off the class with our interviews (couldn’t avoid hem any longer!) and they actually went well. I wasn’t too nervous and I didn’t stutter over my own friends so props to me:) Afterwards, Lynn announced that we would be writing a GSP newspaper that would be posted online and that’s when everyone got crazy excited. We divvied up the topics and we will have some re-occurring topics like an advice column, a review column, and other things but then we will also have editorials and feature stories that we will change every week. We start typing it up Friday and I can’t wait - my first assignment is reviews (books/music/movies) and roommate life.

Afterwards, it was time to leave for our field trip to, you guessed it, Morehead News. We walked 2.5 miles in the sweltering heat before we got there for a 20 minute tour. Not that it wasn’t interesting but there just wasn’t much to see. They had downsized from 52 to 18 workers - but that was partly because of the fact that they had consolidated their workforce by replacing it with more efficient technology and relocating their huge printing presses. Although, it was really interesting to see the transition the small local newspaper went through after adjusting to new technological advancements.

We also sat down and talked with the publisher of the paper and some of the other staff and got to ask questions and he got to tell us a bit more about working for the press. Sadly, that conversation dragged on for about 2 hours leaving us with now time to go to The Fuzzy Duck:( Hopefully Lynn will take us next week!

The majority of my day had been spent dominating at Apples to Apples so I can’t complain too much;) The roommates and I are about to head off the second installment of Between a Tweet and a Blog. I don’t have high expectations considering last weeks wasn’t all that it was hyped up to be but maybe it will be more interesting! Then, maybe we’ll socialize a but before curfew. Only 2 days left until I see the parents!

edit: The Between a Tweet and a Blog this time was MUCH better! Instead of teachers like last time, today it was RA’s who got up and spoke. They were all incredible but I think my favorite was this one RA, Faina, who pretended that she was going to sing “Let It Be” by The Beatles but then suddenly changed the entire plot of her speech and made it about how we have the power to make anything happen and we shouldn’t just sit around and “let it be” when we an make an impact. It was phenomenal.

On the way, I got caught in a thunderstorm with my jacket over my head until a kind soul from my seminar offered to share his umbrella and walk me to my dorm. It was nice to be able to have a conversation with him outside of class. Overall, a really nice day:)
