9.23.2013// Missed Opportunities

So, if it’s all right, I’d just like to take a moment and talk about all the awesome art-related events that took our town by storm last week:

Thursday:
-Ben Sollee gave an incredible concert &
-Barbara Kingsolver gave a speech and performed a reading
Friday:

-Gallery Hop took place downtown where all the galleries hosted guests
-The annual Poetry Slam as part of the Women’s Writer’s Conference took place in one of the universities &
-The Latino Festival occurred (featuring churros!)

Saturday/Sunday:
-Boomslang Music Festival &
-CRAVE, a local food and music free outdoor festival. Not to mention, one of my all-time favorite bands, Vandaveer, played!

And now, you’re probably wondering how many of those wonderful, mostly free events I actually attended? And the answer to that good question, dear reader, is none thanks to my busy-bee schedule -.- (I’m still bitter about the whole thing)

Speaking of missed opportunities, however, today our Environmental class took a field trip to a Waste Water Treatment Facility. And, I bet you guessed it, I didn’t go to this event either, though this one I chose to miss. I was worried that the teacher would give me trouble for missing her trip (she’s been known to behave so in the past) and hate me even more than she does and I was so nervous I was shaking before I had to speak with her. My reason was valid though because going on the trip would have meant that I missed my two most important classes of the day, Calculus and Art History and we started a new lesson in Art History so I had to be there and we have a quiz tomorrow in Calc so there was no way I was missing that! It all turned out well in the end though, hopefully she doesn’t call me out about it in class tomorrow though! (In my defense, I wasn’t the only one that didn’t go, and plus, I heard the trip stunk. Literally.)

The rest of my day picked up considerably after my stressful morning and I even enjoyed myself considerably for a Monday. However, my favorite part of the day was 6th hour Mentoring when 2 friends and I went to the library to just hang out. One of the friends, let’s call her A.B. is writing a book for her mentoring project which I admire tremendously, and she let us read what she had so far. I tell you, I’m a hardcore fan of YA books but I don’t see how anyone wouldn’t like this book! It was only several pages but I already knew the characters as if they were my own, I knew their characteristics and mannerisms, and I spoke to A.B. about them as if they were my personal friends. The scenes she write between them were spot-on and hysterical - I hadn’t laughed that hard in a long time. As I was reading, I kept imagining how she used parts of herself and her closest friends to shape and mold the personalities of the characters, which I thought was brilliant because anyone who knows A.B. would like to have their personal A.B. to carry around in their pocket like a ray of sunshine. No joke though, she’s that amazing.

I was truly blown away. I hope she reads this, just so she can realize that all of my complimenting and gushing today had been sincere, and not just some secretive ploy to flatter her. A.B., I’m expecting a signed copy once you get published;)
