1.15.2014// When in Mexico - Day 1

Not at all a bad way to start the morning, if I may say so myself. As of 4:00am this morning we are Cancun bound! Everything went smoothly with our flights and our connection in Miami. The funniest thing was the culture shock stepping into the Miami airport - there, everything was predominantly in spanish. People spoke in spanish, a majority of the people were latino or hispanic, and even announcements were spoken first in spanish, and then in english. Crazy! Good prep for Mexico though. More than anything, I'm excited to be going to Mexico/Caribbean for the first time.

We finally got to Cancun after our all-day travels and I was blown away! Quite literally actually - Caribbean winds are strong! The heat difference, coming from negative degrees in Lexington, was phenomenal and I was more than ready to retire the boots and scarves, even if only for a week. Then there were the palm trees. I knew there would be palm trees but I didn't expect them to be that huge and tall and frankly, I can be amused by the smallest of things:)

Our resort is beautiful and the beach is pristinely clean. The water is stunning with five different shades of blue. I could probably rave about the scenery for hours if people would let me! The only downside was that when we got there, it had just rained and even though the sun would poke out form the clouds for a little bit, it was still mostly cloudy. That meant it was also incredibly cold and windy, regardless of the fact that it was only around four in the afternoon. But tomorrow is a new day - hopefully a sunny one - and we had an amazing dinner to compensate for the lackluster weather!

Sometimes, my parents can simultaneously make me laugh and frustrate me to no end. I'm used to bartering for things in Bulgaria and making (or more like dodging) deals and offer from sales people, but I hadn't considered that we would need to do the same in Mexico! Thus, we got to our hotel, get our room key, and they usher us to have a seat and a drink before we get an 'unofficial tour' to settle us in. When our guide comes, his name was Gonzalo might I add, the trickery begins. He tried to get us to buy tours to the Mayan ruins or if it wasn't the ruins it was an aquarium or a museum or god knows what else. When we said no to that (the airport had already tried to sell us tickets to those very same things as well!) he started trying to sell us an 'exclusive membership' to the hotels member's club. He said he would give us 'a special deal' that was 'an exception, only for you guys' - nice try Gonzalo, haha. In exchange for listening to an hour and a half sales pitch/tour of the members area, our room would be upgraded and instead of paying the hundreds of dollars for the upgrade, Gonzalo again gave us one of his 'special deals' and said we'd only pay fifteen. Now, I don't know what possibly could have possessed mother (could have something to do with the fact that cocktails are complimentary) but all of a sudden she makes a special deal of her own - that'll we'll go on the tour if we get the upgrade for free. And it worked! Well sort of, haha. We were tricked I tell you. They didn't change our room because turns out we already had an ocean view and Gonzalo tried to twist some story about how it had only been temporary while our other one was getting ready but we saw straight through him. So that is how tomorrow morning, I will be enjoying my first breakfast in Mexico listening to a sales pitch and then taking an hour and a half of my beach time walking around the restart. All for that ocean view, right mom haha?
